The public hearing on the Draft Massachusetts MS4 Permit will be at Leominster Public Library on November 19, 1 – 3 p.m. EPA will record oral comments about the draft regulations for the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems Permit. Written comments can be submitted to EPA through December 29, 2014.
Storm sewer systems collect rain and snowmelt from streets and carry polluted runoff to local waters. The draft MS4 permit would require communities to use effective programs that reduce pollutants and better protect streams, lakes and water supplies.
The 2014 MS4 Permit affects 260 cities and towns across the state. Communities have raised concerns about the cost of the regulations when municipal budgets are very tight.
In October, EPA held information meetings at four locations to explain Permit regulations and answer questions. The helpful presentation provided at the meetings can be viewed and downloaded at http://www.epa.gov/region1/npdes/stormwater/ma/Presentation495.pdf.
